The following is a guest post about one of Croatia’s summer music festivals.

The Unknown Festival in Rovinj, Croatia, is on this year from 10-14 of September and promises some great music from singers, bands and DJs. As the name suggests, this festival is not quite like any other and although some of the headliners are well-known, they are from all genres of music and many countries of the world. The headliners are Actress, Clean Bandit, Disclosure, Django Django, Dutch Uncles, East India Youth, Factory Floor, Four Tet, Henrik Schwarz, Jahwar Ma, Jessie Ware, Jon Hopkins, Lindstrom, Lulu James, Moderat, Pawws, The Horrors, Theme Park and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs interspersed with DJ sets on the main stage and around the festival site. This is one of the last summer festivals of the year and is in such a fabulous setting it really does make a great holiday treat. Packages are available for the festival, flights and hotel included, so if you are not the kind of person who likes to do too much planning, one click can do it all.

How to get there

Rovinj is on the lovely Croatian coast on the Istrian peninsula on the Adriatic and is served by Pula airport, just a 40 minute drive away. Rijeka, Trieste, Zagreb, Ljubljana and Venice airports are all a few hours’ drive from the festival, so it is possible to mix and match your holiday destinations to take in the festival wherever you are in the area. All these airports are served by very frequent flights from all major UK airports, First Choice have some great last minute deals to Croatia. If you are travelling with friends, there are loads of apartments to rent in Rovinj and if you don’t like roughing it at festivals, these make a great place to crash while the music is still in your head.

What to do after the festival

It would be a shame not to stay and look around once the festival is over and this is certainly a lovely part of the world. Facing Venice across the Adriatic, Rovinj has a very strong Italian feel, with pastel-washed houses and typical narrow streets and tall houses. The food is Italian influenced too, and when you go out to dinner expect to be sitting at the table for a long time and enjoying every mouthful. Rovinj and in fact most of the peninsula is not expensive and if you have taken advantage of one of the festival packages your holiday will not be expensive at all. Arranging individual flights can be a little more pricey but as always it is important to shop around. Rovinj has been in constant use as a port since Roman times and the surroundings have architecture from almost every century.

The weather in September is still very pleasant, with low humidity so it is very comfortable to go walking or sightseeing around the town. Because of the sub-tropical vegetation, walking in almost any direction will bring you into some beautiful countryside and the salt marshes just outside town have the most incredible number of seabirds nesting, feeding or simply passing through – a brilliant place for any bird watcher.
