An Interview with Issei: Gay Life & Tips in Tokyo

We learned about being gay in Japan from our interview with Issei, a gay student from Osaka, who lives in Tokyo. He was our gracious CouchSurfing host and loves travels as much as we do.

Traveling in Tokyo can be expensive and confusing. It has one of the busiest, most extensive rapid transit systems in the world and while English is seen and spoken often enough, the language barrier is bound to cause a problem at some point. But when you have someone who knows the city helping you out, it becomes much more navigable so you can make the most of your trip. This is why we felt very lucky to have been invited to stay with Issei, a 20 year old Japanese student (on hiatus) living in Tokyo, through CouchSurfing.org.

A Few Things to Know About Gay Friendly Bogota

The bustling city of Bogota is the capital of Colombia and is centrally located within the country. It's the largest city and has a population just above 7 million. It was a well established gay scene, particularly around Carrera 9, which is in the neighborhood called Chapinero. Some of the most popular gay bars are Color House Café Bar, El Recreo de Adan, Estacion and Brokeback Mountain. Of course the main gay nightlife attraction of Bogota is the megaclub called Theatron, which is the largest gay dance club in all of Latin America. The drag scene in Bogota is also quite popular and the city hosts many drag events throughout the year.

What’s the Best Traditional Food to Eat during a Visit to Helsinki?

One of the highlights of my visit to Finland was the food tour I took on the last day I spent in Helsinki, the country's capital and most populous city. Food tours are one of our favorite activities while traveling. You get to experience some of the city’s best restaurants, cafes and markets as recommended by the locals without having to do much planning yourself.  While it’s true we’re not huge fans of traditional walking tours, we jump at the opportunity to take a food tour.

Gay Friendly Tel Aviv – What is there to look forward to?

It’s a place where cultures collide: Jews, Arabs, Christians, atheists, artists, scientists, locals, foreigners, young, old, gay and straight – they all share this rather secular city in such a religious country. But somehow this diversity and tolerance of one another has created an ambience in Tel Aviv rarely found in other cities throughout the world.

15 Reasons Why You Should Attend WorldPride Madrid

Madrid is without a doubt our favorite place in the world. On a recent trip back to the states, we had the pleasure to attend a World Pride Madrid pre-party with amazing hosts (yes drag queens!), fabulous guests and a particularly Spanish flare not often found in New York City. The event was intended to introduce Madrid and World Pride to the US audience, who for reasons we can't quite figure out, don't fully know about Madrid and it's reputation as a gay friendly destination.
